The Message Generator Add-on is a Google Sheets tool that lets you generate messages directly from spreadsheet data, create and manage reusable templates, and map sheet columns to template fields. It features an intuitive interface with modal dialogs and securely stores all templates and mappings. Everything runs entirely within your sheet, with no data collection, sharing, third-party services, or external web requests.
This Add-on is made with the intent to simplify everyday repetitive tasks like writing simple messages. You can take a template you created and use it to generate multiple similar messages with the click of a button.
The Message Generator Add-on is a Google Sheets add-on that allows you to:
Generate messages from spreadsheet data.
Create, manage, and delete templates.
Map spreadsheet columns to template fields.
Key Features:
Intuitive UI with modal dialogs.
Stores templates and mappings securely in the spreadsheet’s Document Properties.
Works entirely within your spreadsheet — no data is collected or shared.
No third-party services or web requests are used.
Install the add-on from the Workspace Marketplace.
Open a Google Sheet. The add-on menu “Scripts” will appear automatically.
3. Click menu items to open dialogs and start by creating a template.
4. Pick a name for the template
5. Next start by writing out a message and leave a placeholder to represent data on the sheet.
6. Scroll down to the section that is labeled “Mappings”. You will see a list of column headers.
7. In the box labeled “alias” you can put the placeholder you used to refer to data on the sheet. The data will be pulled from that column. You do not have to create an alias for every column only ones you plan/are using. (Make sure the placeholders match exactly)
8. Once you have finished the name, message, and aliases you can press create template. Wait for the popup to disappear showing that the template was created successfully. (Template names need to always be unique)
9. Next click the “Message Generator” tab in the scripts menu. This should open the message generator.
10. The first thing is to select a “Primary Key”. This is the name of the row you want the data from. You can start typing after clicking on it to find the correct row.
11. The next thing is to select a template. These templates are created by you. (Refer to the previous steps).
12. After selecting a “Primary Key” and a template click on the generate message button. After a short delay the message box will be filled in.
13. You can now copy the generated message and paste it where it is needed.
14. You can then select another “Primary Key” and generate a message with that row's data without needing to make another template.
15. To delete/remove a template once again click on the script menu and then click “Template Manager”
16. You can then select a template and click the delete button. When the popup closes the template has successfully been deleted. (Deleting a template makes it disappear forever)
The add-on does not collect or share any data. All data remains in the spreadsheet.
